Rashes Q&A

What are rashes?

A rash is skin irritation. Typical symptoms of a rash include bumpy skin, itchiness, swelling, and blisters. However, rash symptoms can vary widely from one person to the next.

Rashes can be very uncomfortable, often prompting scratching. That can, unfortunately, make matters worse, sometimes causing the skin to break, bleed, or ooze fluid. An untreated rash can also lead to a skin infection.

What causes rashes?

There are many reasons for skin rashes, including:

  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Contact dermatitis (rash due to an allergen)
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus)
  • Shingles
  • Hives
  • Ringworm
  • Lichen planus

There are many other reasons for rashes as well. Although each condition has unique characteristics, most rashes cause fairly similar issues.

When should I seek medical care for a rash?

If you experience symptoms of rash complications, you may need more help than an over-the-counter cream can provide. Reach out to the Hobart K. Richey, MD, PA, office right away if you experience:

  • Widespread rash
  • Rash with a fever
  • Sudden rash that quickly spreads to other areas
  • Rash that blisters
  • Uncomfortable or painful rash
  • Rash that oozes pus, crusted skin, or warm-feeling skin (signs of infection)

Dr. Richey can evaluate your rash and make a prompt diagnosis so you can begin treatment.

How are rashes treated?

Rash treatment depends on the cause of the rash and your symptoms. Dr. Richey uses a conservative approach, starting with treatments that ease symptoms like itching.

You may need a topical prescription ointment or cream to relieve discomfort and accelerate healing. Dr. Richey may also suggest lifestyle changes to help you avoid new rashes. If you have a secondary infection with your rash, you most likely need antibiotics.

When rashes happen because of a chronic condition, for example, eczema, Dr. Richey can help you take steps to avoid triggers and minimize flare-ups. That may involve changing some of the products you use, protecting your skin in the sun, bathing in warm (versus hot) water, and other changes.

Every rash is just as different as the person who develops it, so there’s no single solution for rash treatment. Dr. Richey takes the time to get to the bottom of your rash to prescribe the best solution. If he suspects that an allergy is the cause of your rash, he can arrange for you to see a trusted allergist ASAP.

The Hobart K. Richey, MD, PA, office is always available to help with rashes and other skin issues, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you have a problem. Book your appointment online or call the office for help today.
